Why You Need God in Your Quest for Success

”…for without Me, you can do nothing” John 15:5

Sometimes this phrase in the Bible “Without Me you can do nothing”, does not make much sense until you have an experience that confirms it. When you go through an experience that defies all your plans and expectations, it compels you look for solutions. It is then that the scripture above makes sense.

I hope that you will understand why you need to depend on God and surrender everything to Him so that you can experience the best of God’s plans for your life.

When You Are Confident About Your Plans and Abilities

You are all fired up about a goal or something you want to achieve – maybe it’s a new job, a business deal, a relationship etc. You are very passionate about it and you are very confident about achieving this with little or no effort. You have all it takes, but as you get underway with this effort, things do not work out quickly or turn out the way you had planned.

The desire to succeed pushes you to put in your best effort, you are patient, hopeful and optimistic and believe that you will get the results you want; but each time, you get disappointed. Slowly, you are now beginning to lose the confidence you had at the beginning and you are now thinking that something must be wrong somewhere.

Perhaps, you are not as good as you thought you were, or maybe you were not even supposed to do this. You are disappointed, confused, and angry at the same time. Your plans seem to be falling apart and you can’t even explain what’s going on around you.

Times of Testing

Be careful When you find yourself in a situation like this. James 4:13–14 tells us to be careful about going about our lives as if we are in charge of our lives.

Sometimes, things don’t always workout exactly the way you plan them. Some unforeseen event may just throw a spanner in your wheel of progress and you will see all your plans fall apart.

God is good and there is no evil in Him, but sometimes He allows trials to come to you to derail or disrupt the plans that you have made if those plans are not His intentions for you.

It is a fact that you will always be faced with trials at various points in your life. God will confirm and establish His plans for you during these times. He will also cause the plans that are not from Him to fall away during this time as well. The devil may cause hard times to come to you, but God has a way of turning it around for your ultimate good.

Surrendering Everything to God

Many people become sad and depressed when their plans do not work out as they had hoped it would. The Bible tells us that “hope deferred makes the heart sick”(Proverbs 13:12). You get angry and lose interest in everything, and sometimes you even get angry with God for hindering your plans.

Anger, disappointment, sorrow, and sadness do not change the situation. They may even harm you or make you worse off if you don’t know how to manage them properly. There is only one way to get over a situation like this- surrender and yield to God, because without Him, you cannot do anything. “It is in Him that we live, we move and have our being” (Acts 17:28).

Why You Should Surrender and Yield to God

Surrender refers to yielding, giving up and submitting. When you surrender to God, it means you are giving Him permission to operate in your life. It also means that you trust Him and accept that all that He wants to do in your life are for your own good (Jeremiah 29:11). It may come across as a sign of weakness, but it is a source of power when you surrender to God.

God sees the end from the beginning, He created you and He knows what’s best for you, His plans for you are good and better than the best plans you can come up with.

You cannot fathom or comprehend what God can do in your life when you fully surrender to Him. He will always exceed your expectations and dreams.

When Hannah cried out to God about her barrenness, God answered and gave her a son – Samuel. God blessed her with more children when she fulfilled her vow and gave up Samuel to the service of God.

When the boy with five loaves and two fishes gave up his food, he ended up with twelve baskets full of bread and fish.

You will achieve amazing things you did not know were possible when you allow God to operate in your life. You cease from struggling because God becomes an ever-present help for you since He abides in your life. This is depicted in this scripture John 15:5

“I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing”.

Results of Surrendering All to God

1. Being Fruitful

When you absolutely trust and depend on God, it becomes easy to surrender all your cares and struggles to Him. One of the direct benefits of this action is that it fuels your spiritual growth. This will help you mature as a child of God and bear fruits.

You will be able to talk to other people about your experience with God and how He has helped you to become a better person. You will be able to share the good news of what God can do with other people.

2. Extraordinary Achievements

Another result of surrendering to God is the achievements of things that are beyond your ability, comprehension, expectations and feats. This is what God did with Abraham. He brought him to a point where it was difficult to believe that his son Isaac will still live if he sacrificed him.

But Abraham still chose to trust and believe in God, surrendering all his desires and cares to God. At this point, Abraham triggered an eternal blessing from God which God swore by Himself to do (Genesis 22:12-15).

3. Enduring Blessings

The benefits of surrendering everything to God do not come and fizzle away quickly. They are long term benefits that often transcend generations. The promise that God made to Abraham was for him and his children’s children – an entire nation.

The same thing happened to David when God made a promise to establish him as King of Israel and to always have one of his descendants on the throne (I Kings 9:4-5). The commitments you make today may change your life and future in ways that you can never imagine.

In conclusion, you may want to be in control of your life and workout everything the way you want it and when you want it. However, the place of real control is surrendering the driver’s seat in your life to God and giving Him the liberty in your life to do as He wishes.

The benefits of yielding and surrendering all the issues in your life are endless, and they don’t fail because God who guarantees them cannot fail.

Are you willing to take that step today to trust God and surrender all your issues, pain, disappointments, failures etc. to Him so that He can take over your life? He will lead you and do amazing things in your life if only you will trust and surrender to Him.

Heavenly Father,

I know that I am a sinner and need Your forgiveness. I believe that You died on the cross for my sins and rose from the grave to give me life.

I know You are the only way to God. Help me to stop disobeying You and to start living for You.

Please forgive me, change my life and help me to know You more.

In Jesus’ name. Amen.
