Following God’s Direction: Lessons from Using the GPS App

I was traveling back home on a road trip with my family after having a wonderful family time. This was my first time driving on this stretch of the highway, so I decided to use the GPS app on my phone for directions. The trip was uneventful and nice except for some scattered light showers we encountered intermittently.

We got to an interchange where I was supposed to switch routes from one highway to another. This is where things started looking different. I focused on a particular lane believing that this must be the correct lane to take, but the GPS was indicating a different lane.

Ignoring the Right Directions

In my opinion, the lane the GPS app was directing me to use did not seem to be the correct route, and it didn’t look right either. There were “work in progress” signs on that lane and it looked as if it had been closed to traffic.

My wife tried to let me know that I was taking the wrong lane, but I didn’t listen to her. I am sure you’re now wondering what happened next. I followed the lane that my eyes were fixed on and ended up on a different route that headed in a different direction from where we were going.

As soon as we emerged on the other side of the interchange, I saw a road sign that indicated we were heading the wrong way. I had to quickly look for the next U-turn sign to return back on the right road.

Choosing Your Own Direction

Many times, we behave this way when God tries to speak to us. We hear God’s instruction clearly about a particular issue or situation but feel God’s instruction or direction is not the best way to go. We often believe in our ability to take care of our issues by ourselves without God’s help until we end up on the ‘wrong road’ or with bad results.

If you are a believer, know that you have the spirit of God in you that speaks to you and reveals God’s will to you. This is what my wife was trying to do; letting me know the lane I was taking was the wrong one. The Holy Spirit will always caution us when we are about to do the wrong thing, but He cannot force us to heed His warnings.

(John 16:13)“But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.

God has given us His Spirit to show us the way to live life on this side of eternity. He has also given us the Bible- His Word to help us navigate the journey we all have been called to embark on here on earth (2 Timothy 3: 16) tells us that:

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.

Results of Ignoring God’s Direction

Most times the consequences of ignoring God’s direction can be very catastrophic and costly. For me, not heeding the GPS’s directions and my wife’s warnings only cost me additional time (a few minutes) but others have paid a huge price in heartaches, lost opportunities and unfortunately even loss of lives for refusing to follow God’s directions.

What will it be for you? Will you trust that God knows what He is doing even when it does not make sense, or will you choose to do life your own way? The choice is yours, I pray you choose His way.

You can choose to follow God’s directions today by surrendering to Him and asking Him to lead you. It’s simple, just pray the prayer below.

Decision Box

Heavenly Father,

I know that I am a sinner and that I need Your forgiveness. I believe that You died on the cross for my sins and rose from the grave to give me life.

I acknowledge that You are the only way to God. Help me to stop disobeying You and start living for You.

Please forgive me, change my life and Help Me to know You More.

In Jesus’ name. Amen.
