God created you in His likeness and wants to keep a relationship with you. He wants commune and interact with you always. His spirit (and presence) dwells in you and your conscience is always there to remind you of the presence of God in your life.
You may be think that your life will become miserable if you get close to God because of the things He will impose on you or prevent you from doing. This is not true, Gods plans and purposes are the best for your life and He always exceeds the expectations of anybody who believes in Him.
Make no mistake about this, God loves you passionately and He wants to have a very close relationship with you.
God Wants You to be Close to Him
Just like a good father loves to play with his children, God wants to be close to you and enjoy your company.
God has always expressed and communicated His desire to be in a close relationship with you right from the very beginning of time. This is why He created man (Adam) and kept him in the garden of Eden so that He could relate with and enjoy a relationship with him.
This has not changed; although Adam disobeyed God and lost that relationship (and by extension every human), God still found a way to mend it by sending His son Jesus Christ to die on the cross and redeem us all from our sins (Romans 4:25).
The salvation that Jesus Christ gives you and all who believe in Him restores you back to a relationship of sweet communion with God.
You should not be afraid to desire and maintain a relationship with Him. God really loves you and He has been waiting for you to come back to Him. He will not forsake you if you receive and accept Him into your life.
He wants to enjoy your company. He says in Isaiah “Come now let’s reason together… if you are willing and obedient you will eat the good of the land” (Isaiah 1:18-19). God is longing for you to come back to Him.
No matter what you have done, no matter what your situation may look like, He still wants you. He promises that if you obey and yield to His invitation and come back to Him, you will enjoy the benefits of having God as your father (you will enjoy the good of the land).
Why You Should be Close to God
There are several reasons why you should desire to have a close relationship with God. These reasons are not exhaustive, but the few mentioned below will give you a glimpse of why you need to experience and enjoy this beautiful relationship.
1. The Longing for Fulfillment
God wants us to live fulfilled lives. There is a longing in your life, a strong yearning that only God can fill. A song writer (Don Moen) wrote a song that says in part “There is a longing, that only you can feel, a raging tempest that only you can still, my soul is thirsty to know You as I’m known…”
There is a void or emptiness, purposelessness in your life that only God can fill. Only God fits perfectly in that space and only He can give you that satisfaction and longing in your soul.
David had this experience when he wrote “As the deer pants for water so my soul longs for you…” (Psalms 42:1-2).
You may think that you can get this emotional high or satisfaction from alcohol, drugs, sex etc. but all of these things will only make you more miserable. Only God can fill this longing in your life; He wants to give you the satisfaction, freedom, joy, and peace that your heart longs so much for.
2. Divine Wisdom
There is a certain level of wisdom that comes from spending time with God and enjoying His presence; it comes when you are in a close relationship with Him.
God will always guide you and direct your steps in all that you do especially during challenging times in your life.
This was David’s secret to winning all his battles. During his life time, he was never defeated, not because he was a great warrior but because he always depended on God for wisdom in fighting his battles.
3. God wants to Reveal Secrets and Give You Insights
He will only give His deep secrets to those who fear Him and are close to Him. “The secrets of the Most High are with them that fear Him and He reveals His covenant with them” (Psalms 25:14)
There may have been times you achieved certain feats that seemed impossible humanly speaking; this might have been the wisdom of God on display in your life. God only gives His wisdom and secrets to people He can trust. You will receive more of God’s wisdom if you get closer to Him.
If you are not spending time with God, you won’t understand Him and His ways and it will be difficult for Him to trust you with some secrets that may be life transforming.
How to Get Close to God
You can enjoy an amazing relationship with God and consistently maintain a wonderful relationship with Him. This is God’s desire for you and He is waiting for you. You can begin making the efforts to get closer to Him by taking these simple steps -:
1. Acknowledge your Need for God
The first step to getting closer to God is realizing that you need Him in your life. You may have been running away from God, but He has always been there waiting for you to come back to Him so that you can enjoy a relationship with Him.
Though you may think He is still angry with you for the things you have done, know that His anger only last for a moment; He is no longer angry with you.
He is waiting for you to call upon Him, and He has promised that if you call, He will answer you.
2. Desire the Presence of God
There is a longing in your heart that nothing else can satisfy, a craving in your spirit that yearns for the presence of God.
Open your heart to God, sincerely ask Him to fill you with His presence and you will experience the fullness of God in a way you have never known before.
3. Spend Time with God
For any relationship to thrive, there must be a significant time commitment between the parties involved.
You need to set aside some time to spend with God everyday if you really want to get closer to Him and experience Him in a new way like never before. Reading the Bible and meditating on His word, praising and worshiping Him in songs and course, and conversing with Him in prayer every day, will bring you closer to Him.
4. Tell Others About God
One of the ways you can strengthen any relationship you have is by telling others about the person you are in a relationship with. It is the same with God.
You can further enhance your relationship with God by telling others about God or at least letting them see your love for Him by the way you live your life and treat others around you.
5. Resolve to Stay with God
When you are close to someone, you eventually get to develop a strong bonding with them and may resolve to stay committed to them (like in a marriage).
It is the same with your relationship with God. When you begin to enjoy good times in God’s presence, know that hard times will come; there will be times you will struggle with the truth that God is with you all the time because circumstances will indicated otherwise.
However, irrespective of what you may be going through either now or in the future always know that He will always be there for you. He is a faithful God that NEVER changes! So resolve to stay with Him even when He feels far away.
If you feel you have gone very far from God, know that you have an opportunity right now to return to Him and re-establish the relationship you once had with Him. God has been waiting for this moment, don’t walk away from Him again.
It’s simple, just say the prayer in the decision box below and mean it from your heart.
I know that I am a sinner and that I need Your forgiveness. I believe that You died on the cross for my sins and rose from the grave to give me life.
I know You are the only way to God. So now I want to quit disobeying You and start living for You.
Please forgive me, change my life and show me how to know You.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
